Machete Review: Ka-Bar Kukri

The Kukri was the only machete I have ever purchased from Ka-Bar and I doubt it will be the last. As far as I know Ka-Bar sells two black series machetes; the kukri and the cutlass. In the future I will most likely purchase the cutlass model and share a review on that as well.

Simply put the Ka-Bar Kukri is a durable workhorse and overall struck me as a very good quality machete. I have run several field tests on it and it holds up very well. I cut through several 5-7" thick red cedar logs quite quickly when collecting firewood. I also used this machete for a good 5-6 hours when clearing a large section of brush from my uncles backyard. The ergonomic handle kept my hand comfortable the entire time which was quite surprising, my experiences with wood and plastic handle machetes were definitely another story..

Gear Review: Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack

Maxpedition describes the Fatboy Versipack as a state of the art portable gear organizer. I had high expectations when I ordered this shoulder sling pack; my expectations were met and exceeded. Maxpedition is known for its exceptionally high quality products and the Fatboy Versipack is certainly no exception!

The main thing I love about the Maxpedition Versipack is how it can fit just about all my necessary gear in a small, compact bag. I have owned quite a few different backpacks including a Camelbak backpack and have to say the Fatboy Versipack is much more durable and functional and than any other gear organizer I have owned.

Tent Review: MSR Hubba Hubba

MSR's (Mountain Safety Research) Hubba Hubba two person tent is one of the top 5 ultralight back country tents on the market. This tent is a Backpacker Editors Choice award winner for outstanding performance, innovative design and high quality construction.

I brought this tent into some very harsh environments since I have owned it and the MSR Hubba Hubba handled everything I could throw at it. Death Valley, the Rockies and northern Alaska were just a few of the locations I brought this tent. I'm glad to report that the Hubba Hubba can stand up to very strong winds and handles a severe rain storm at high altitudes equally well. In my experience this tent is fine for the winter even though it is listed as a 3 season tent.

Tool Review: SOG Powerlock Multi-Tool (EOD)

SOG manufactures the only multi-tools that use compound leverage technology. How it works is the gears right under the pliers add torque when you apply pressure and double the generated gripping/crimping power. You can really feel the smooth power generated by the SOG multi-tools over other brands.

The sheath is great quality, the tool has a nice finish, I like how the pliers are tapered at the ends, the handles are a very comfortable grip when squeezing tight and the knife blade comes very sharp right out of the box. The piano lock is also a great function, you can lock any of the tools individually. As mentioned in CutleryLover's review below the opening of the tool is also much smoother than other comparable multi-tools.

Flashlight Review: Streamlight Stylus Pro

The Streamlight Stylus Pro is one of the worlds most powerful and durable LED penlights. The high flux LED is boosted by micro optical systems; in layman's terms this new technology boosts the power coming from the batteries and by doing so provides a very strong beam of light. It also works to maintain battery life and ensure consistent lighting strength.

When I took the Stylus Pro camping I used it as a general flashlight. The light output is very impressive for such a small tool. The high flux LED has an incredible 30,000 hour (3 year) life span. This means I will never need to change the bulb which is a huge plus.
